How to manage winter blues during the pandemic
Spending time outdoors has been vital to our mental wellbeing since the beginning of the pandemic. The warm weather encouraged us to exercise and socialise with family and friends safely. But as the colder, darker winter months arrive, it’s not unusual to experience feelings of anxiety and depression as spending time outdoors becomes harder.
These feelings could be linked to seasonal affective disorder (SAD), a type of depression that’s usually more apparent during autumn and winter. Common symptoms include persistent low moods, a loss of interest in everyday activities, and feeling lethargic, stressed or anxious. For some, SAD can have a significant impact on their day-to-day life.
That’s why this World Mental Health Day (Saturday 10th October), we want to encourage you to take some steps to protect your wellbeing:
- Get enough sunlight – getting out and about is a great way to increase our exposure to sunlight but if our bodies are in need of more, sitting next to an artificial light box for 30 minutes a day can be just as effective as the real thing. The light boosts the serotonin levels in our bodies, and decreases the risk of depression for those at risk of SAD.
- Keep in contact with people – making a video call via Zoom or FaceTime is a great way of communicating and staying connected with others. This can help to combat feelings of loneliness as well reducing levels of stress and anxiety.
- Stay active – exercising releases endorphins, which make us feel good, so find ways to keep yourself moving - head outside for a walk and explore local areas or find fun activities to do at home.
- Stick to a schedule – going to sleep and waking up at the same time each day helps to strengthen our body’s internal clock and make it easier for us to fall asleep. When we sleep well, we naturally feel better in ourselves so it’s important to maintain a regular routine.
